New fire restrictions are now in effect at Belle Fourche Reservoir and the Rocky Point State Recreation Area due to extreme heat and dry conditions.
The Bureau of Reclamation and South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks announced the restrictions on July 13th, citing ongoing wildfire concerns and existing fire restrictions already in place across Butte County.
The restrictions apply to the reservoir, Rocky Point State Recreation Area, and surrounding lands managed by the two agencies.
Under the order, campfires are prohibited. Cooking is allowed only with elevated propane grills or stoves, and vehicles must stay on graveled roads or roadways clear of vegetation.
Officials say the measures are intended to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires during a period of elevated fire danger.
Anyone who sees a fire on reservoir lands is urged to call 911 immediately. Suspected violations can be reported to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
The restrictions will remain in effect until weather conditions improve.
