As preparations continue for the 86th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, city officials say their focus will remain on public safety and core city services rather than hosting a large number of events.
During a city council meeting Monday, Sturgis City Administrator Aaron Jordan said the city will sponsor just three official events during this year’s Rally, scheduled for August 7th through the 16th. The reduced schedule mirrors last year’s approach and allows staff to concentrate on public safety, sanitation, traffic management, and maintaining clean streets.
The city-sponsored events include the Rally opening ceremony on August 7th, the Mayor’s Ride on August 8th, and a Military Appreciation event on August 11th.
Officials say this year’s military event will be expanded through a partnership with Harley-Davidson, including a complimentary breakfast for active-duty military members and veterans. The event could also feature a B-1 bomber flyover from Ellsworth Air Force Base, although that remains dependent on aircraft availability.
Meanwhile, Mayor Rod Bradley proposed extending Main Street’s motorcycle-only traffic restrictions through the end of Rally week. However, the proposal did not move forward after council members declined to bring it to a vote.
The 86th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is set for August 7th through the 16th.
