The Meade County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a person died Friday following an incident in a Sturgis business parking lot.
Authorities say a concerned caller reported a driver traveling eastbound on Interstate 90 while displaying a firearm shortly before 11 a.m. South Dakota Highway Patrol located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver continued into Sturgis and exited at Whitewood Service Road.
According to officials, the vehicle stopped in a business parking lot, where the driver suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite an immediate response from emergency personnel, the individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
The person’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members.
The Sturgis Police Department and Meade County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint investigation. Officials say they released information about the incident because it occurred in a highly visible public location and generated significant community concern.
