Rapid City officials are encouraging residents to donate old cell phones, tablets, chargers, and cords through the 911 Cell Phone Bank program, which now has a permanent drop-off location at City Hall.
The city first hosted a temporary collection drive last winter, during which residents donated more than 400 cell phones. Following the success of that effort, City Hall became a permanent donation site in May through a partnership with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
Donated devices are repaired, refurbished, recycled, and securely wiped before being distributed to victims of violent crimes through partner agencies.
City officials say the phones can provide a critical lifeline for people in need of emergency communication and support services.
Donations are also accepted at the Public Safety Building on Kansas City Street. Residents seeking more information can contact the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office.
