New fire restrictions will take effect across the Black Hills National Forest beginning Monday as fire danger continues to increase across the region.
Forest officials say Stage 2 Fire Restrictions will go into effect at 12:01 a.m. Monday on all National Forest lands in South Dakota and Wyoming, including campgrounds, picnic areas, and other developed recreation sites.
The restrictions are intended to protect both the public and firefighters as critical fire weather conditions elevate the risk of wildfires.
Under the restrictions, campfires, charcoal grills, and other open flames are prohibited. The only exception is for liquid- or gas-fueled devices that can be turned on and off and are used in an area cleared of flammable materials.
Smoking is only allowed inside enclosed vehicles or buildings. Welding, torch use, and explosives are also prohibited. In addition, motor vehicles must remain on established roads, trails, and parking areas.
The restrictions are scheduled to remain in effect through December 27th unless forest officials determine conditions improve enough to lift them earlier.
Officials are urging visitors to use extreme caution while recreating in the Black Hills and to help prevent human-caused wildfires.
