Authorities are investigating a drowning at Hippie Hole, a popular swimming and cliff-jumping destination in the Black Hills.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to the area around 10:30 Tuesday morning after receiving reports of a possible drowning. Emergency crews responding to the scene later confirmed that a drowning had occurred.
Officials say the victim was visiting the Black Hills from outside the area. The person’s identity is being withheld until family members have been notified.
The sheriff’s office noted that while Hippie Hole remains a popular recreation spot, its remote location and difficult access can make emergency response efforts more challenging.
Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including local fire departments, ambulance services, the Rapid City-Pennington County Water Rescue Team, Pennington County Search and Rescue, Black Hills Life Flight, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, and the South Dakota National Guard.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities say more information will be released as it becomes available.
