After two decades of service, Lead Building Inspector Dennis Schumacher is retiring, bringing to a close a career that spanned much of the city’s recovery following the closure of the Homestake Mine.
When Schumacher joined the city in 2005, Lead was struggling with economic decline, abandoned properties, and limited resources. He says the city has come a long way since then.
One of his proudest achievements was helping improve Lead’s Insurance Services Office rating, which measures a community’s fire protection capabilities. Through training, certifications, and updated procedures, the city’s rating improved from a 9 to a 4, a change that can help lower insurance costs for property owners.
Schumacher also oversaw the rehabilitation of numerous aging and abandoned properties, working to preserve Lead’s historic character while maintaining safety standards.
Reflecting on his 20-year career, Schumacher says he has watched Lead grow into a stronger community with new homes, thriving businesses, and continued investment.
His retirement takes effect August 7th. Schumacher says he’s grateful to have worked alongside dedicated city employees and residents who helped make Lead’s turnaround possible.
