A motorcycle rider is in critical condition after colliding with two deer while traveling to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
The crash happened on Highway 78 near Burns, Oregon. According to friends traveling with the rider, Frank Ulrich was riding ahead of a five-person caravan at more than 60 miles per hour when he struck the animals head-on.
Matthew Monk, who was part of the group, says they arrived at the scene to find Ulrich in the roadway and his motorcycle off to the side.
Monk says several motorists quickly stopped to help, including firefighters and EMTs who happened to be passing through the area. He says the first responders immediately began lifesaving measures after discovering Ulrich had no pulse.
Ulrich was transported for medical treatment and remains in critical condition.
The crash has had a profound impact on Monk, a lifelong motorcyclist, who says witnessing the incident firsthand has changed the way he thinks about riding safety and the risks motorcyclists face on the road.
A fundraising effort has been established to help cover Ulrich’s medical expenses. Donations can be made through the Venmo account @FranksFund.
