Two Illinois residents were killed Thursday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on Highway 385 near Hill City.
According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the crash occurred near mile marker 89 and involved two Harley-Davidson motorcycles and a Toyota 4Runner.
Investigators say the motorcycles were traveling northbound when they encountered a Toyota 4Runner stopped in the roadway while attempting to turn onto Wrinkle Valley Road. Authorities say a vehicle between the motorcycles and the SUV drove around the stopped vehicle on the shoulder.
The two motorcycles attempted to stop, but their brakes locked.
A 1956 Harley-Davidson was laid down on the roadway, and its 72-year-old driver suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
A second motorcycle, a 1953 Harley-Davidson, collided with the Toyota and caught fire. The 69-year-old male driver and his 69-year-old female passenger, both from Illinois, were killed in the crash.
The driver and passenger of the Toyota 4Runner were not injured.
Highway 385 was closed for approximately four hours while emergency crews responded and investigators examined the scene.
The names of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of family members.
