The Spearfish School District is evaluating several options for the future of West Elementary School, a building that has served students since 1965.
School officials say the facility faces several challenges, including aging mechanical systems, structural concerns, energy inefficiencies, drainage issues, and limited classroom space.
Architects recently presented four potential paths forward, ranging from continued maintenance to a major renovation or construction of a completely new school. Estimated costs range from roughly 37 million dollars for a large-scale remodel to about 50 million dollars for a new facility.
District leaders say additional space would allow kindergarten classes to return to West Elementary and help meet future educational needs.
No decision has been made, but school officials hope to present options to the community later this year. They say a decision by next spring may be necessary if construction is to begin in 2028.
