Deadwood fire officials are reminding residents that recent rainfall has not eliminated the area’s wildfire risk.
The Deadwood Volunteer Fire Department issued the warning after responding to a lightning-caused wildland fire Monday in rural Deadwood. Officials say good samaritans were already working to extinguish the blaze when crews arrived. Firefighters quickly contained the fire and cleared the scene in about two hours.
The warning comes as crews also responded Monday to the False Bottom Creek Fire near Saint Onge, which burned more than 240 acres.
Fire officials say conditions remain dry enough that residents should continue exercising caution with any activity that could spark a fire.
A burn ban remains in effect for Deadwood and all of Lawrence County.
