A major infrastructure project aimed at improving pedestrian safety and access in Deadwood is moving forward and remains ahead of schedule, despite its first change order.
The Deadwood City Commission recently approved a change order totaling just over $20,800 for additional work on the Crescent Street and Days of ’76 rodeo grounds improvement project. The extra work includes replacing one of the city’s oldest fire hydrants, adding protective bollards, repairing part of the grandstand foundation, and making several drainage and sidewalk improvements.
Public Works Director Lornie Stalder says crews encountered a few unexpected issues during construction, including foundation concerns at one corner of the grandstands that needed to be addressed.
The project includes new sidewalks, curb and gutter work, pedestrian lighting, roadway improvements, a new water line and additional fire protection infrastructure at the rodeo grounds.
The approved change order brings the total project cost to nearly 1-point-8 million dollars. City officials say the added expenses amount to about one percent of the overall project budget and remain well within state guidelines.
Stalder says additional paving work could extend construction by about a month, but he expects the project to be completed by October 15th.
