RAPID CITY, S.D. – As students across the Black Hills head back to school, the South Dakota Department of Health is emphasizing the importance of creating safe learning environments.
The department points to data from the latest Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which found that nearly 9 percent of South Dakota high school students missed school because they felt unsafe either at school or on the way there.
Health officials say feeling safe is a key part of student success and well-being. They encourage parents, educators, students, and community members to help foster open communication, support school safety efforts, and promote a culture of respect and inclusion.
The department says creating safe and welcoming schools helps ensure students can focus on learning and reaching their full potential.
