DEADWOOD, S.D. – The Deadwood City Commission has approved additional work and new cost-sharing agreements to extend improvements along Crescent Street.
During a special meeting Friday, commissioners authorized a nearly $219,000 change order to repair a heavily traveled section of roadway between the Days of ’76 Campground entrance and the South Dakota Department of Transportation maintenance shop.
Public Works Director Lornie Stalder said the project is the result of years of discussions among the City of Deadwood, the Lead-Deadwood Sanitary District, the DOT and the Days of ’76 Rodeo Committee. Officials said the roadway has long been in need of repairs due to heavy use by snowplows, gravel trucks and campground traffic.
Under the agreement, repair costs will be shared among the four entities, with the DOT contributing about $75,000, the City of Deadwood nearly $58,000, the Days of ’76 Rodeo Committee about $50,000 and the Lead-Deadwood Sanitary District roughly $35,500.
Commissioners also approved an updated maintenance agreement, with the city agreeing to take primary responsibility for future upkeep of the roadway.
The Crescent Street reconstruction project, which includes new pavement, sidewalks, lighting, a retaining wall and water line improvements, is partially funded through a $600,000 state transportation grant. With the latest change order, the total project cost now exceeds $2 million.
