LEAD, S.D. – Property owners in Lead will pay slightly higher city property taxes in 2027 after city officials announced plans to request the maximum amount allowed under state law.
The city’s mill levy will increase from 5.40 mills for taxes payable in 2026 to 5.48 mills for taxes payable in 2027, marking the first increase since 2018.
Lead City Administrator Robin Lucero says the city faces unique challenges, including limited room for development and growing demands on infrastructure and services. Even with the increase, the city’s tax rate remains well below levels seen in recent years.
Based on Lead’s tax base of more than $284 million, the city expects to receive about $1.56 million in property tax revenue for its 2027 budget.
City officials will begin a series of public budget workshops in September, with final approval of the 2027 budget expected in November.
