SOUTH DAKOTA – Drivers across South Dakota can expect increased impaired-driving enforcement throughout September as the South Dakota Highway Patrol conducts sobriety checkpoints in 13 counties.
Checkpoints are scheduled in Brown, Beadle, Charles Mix, Codington, Fall River, Hughes, Jones, Kingsbury, Lawrence, Lincoln, Meade, Pennington, and Roberts counties.
The South Dakota Office of Highway Safety is funding the effort, which will involve both Highway Patrol troopers and local law enforcement agencies.
Officials are reminding motorists to plan if alcohol is part of their plans. Suggestions include using a designated driver, arranging a ride, or using public transportation when available.
Authorities stress that drivers should never get behind the wheel while impaired, regardless of whether a checkpoint is scheduled in their area.
The Highway Patrol says the goal of the enforcement effort is to reduce impaired driving and keep South Dakota roads safer for everyone throughout the holiday weekend and the month ahead.
