SPEARFISH, S.D. – Three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Spearfish Tuesday afternoon, and one driver had to be extricated from a heavily damaged vehicle.
The crash happened shortly after 3 p.m. at the intersection of North Avenue and Ryan Road. According to the Spearfish Police Department, a 2022 Chrysler Pacifica was attempting to turn east onto Ryan Road when it collided with a northbound 1994 Chevrolet S-10 pickup.
Both vehicles sustained significant front-end damage, and the Pacifica came to rest in a ditch near Dana Dental. Responders also reported smoke coming from one of the vehicles when they arrived.
Both drivers and a passenger were transported to Monument Health Spearfish Hospital. The pickup driver was freed from the vehicle by emergency crews and later transferred to Monument Health in Rapid City.
Police cited the driver of the Pacifica, a 78-year-old woman from Michigan, for failure to yield. The crash remains under investigation.
Authorities are reminding drivers to be patient and watch carefully for oncoming traffic before making turns.
