Lady Spartans Look to Bounce Back Against Hill City

Spearfish enters the match following a difficult but competitive weekend at the Huron Invitational, where the Spartans finished 0-4 against a strong field that included Chester, Dell Rapids, Huron and Mitchell. While the wins did not come, the Spartans showed improvement throughout the tournament and were most competitive in losses to Huron and Mitchell.

One player who consistently stood out was Julia Billington. The junior outside hitter leads Spearfish with 34 kills this season and is coming off back-to-back eight-kill performances against Huron and Mitchell. Billington has established herself as the Spartans’ go-to offensive option early in the year.

Spearfish will also rely heavily on setter Piper Jacobs, who leads the team with 50 assists, helping direct the offense and distribute the ball to the Spartans’ attackers.

At the net, Taylor Burry has been a key contributor with a team-leading nine blocks, while also providing solid defensive play with 30 digs. Addison Keller has made an impact from the service line with nine aces and leads the team with 52 serve receptions.

Through the opening stretch of the season, Spearfish has accumulated 102 kills, 171 digs, 91 assists, 33 service aces, and 16 total blocks, numbers the Spartans hope will translate into their first victory of the season.

Hill City enters Tuesday’s matchup coming off a 1-3 performance at a tournament in Chadron, Nebraska, and will also be looking to gain momentum early in the season. With both teams searching for consistency, Tuesday’s contest presents an opportunity for either squad to build confidence heading into the heart of the schedule.

For Spearfish, reducing errors and building on the offensive success shown late in the Huron Invitational will be key. The Spartans demonstrated improved hitting efficiency and stronger defensive play as the tournament progressed and will look to carry that momentum into Hill City.
