DEADWOOD, S.D. – Deadwood Fire and Rescue quickly contained a dumpster fire Monday evening outside a newly constructed home in rural Deadwood.
Firefighters were dispatched to Pillar Peak Place around 6:30 p.m. and arrived to find a roll-off dumpster fully engulfed in flames. Crews brought the fire under control before it could spread, and no injuries or property damage were reported.
Officials say the likely cause was oil- or stain-soaked rags discarded by a staining crew that had been working at the home earlier in the day. Firefighters noted that such materials can spontaneously combust if not disposed of properly.
The department says this is the second dumpster fire in the area within the past month linked to oily or stain-soaked rags.
Fire officials recommend storing solvent-soaked rags in metal containers and away from combustible materials. The Lead Fire Department and Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the response.
