HILL CITY, S.D. — Spearfish earned its first road win of the season Tuesday night, defeating Hill City in straight sets, 25-10, 25-20, 25-7, at Gins Gym.
The Lady Spartans improved to 2-4 overall behind a strong performance from the service line and effective play at the net, limiting Hill City’s offensive opportunities throughout the match.
Spearfish took control early in the opening set, building an 18-5 advantage during an 11-1 run fueled by senior outside hitter Addison Keller’s serving. The Spartans maintained that momentum to claim the set 25-10.
The second set was more competitive, as both teams battled through service and serve-receive errors. Neither side led by more than three points for much of the set. Spearfish gained separation late, highlighted by a lengthy rally that featured strong defensive efforts from both teams before the Spartans secured the point and eventually the 25-20 victory.
In the third set, Spearfish again found success at the net. Keller, senior setter Piper Jacobs, and junior outside hitter Julia Billington helped lead the Spartans to a decisive 25-7 win. Billington also added key kills and solid net defense.
Hill City struggled with ball control and passing throughout the match, resulting in service aces, attacking errors, and several rotation violations.
Keller was named Player of the Game after leading Spearfish in aces and helping establish pressure from the opening serve.
The victory gives Spearfish its second win of the season following an 0-4 showing at the Huron Invitational last weekend. The Spartans continue to get comfortable in this new 6-2 system, implemented by fourth-year head coach Shelbie Richards, after running a 5-1 system the last few seasons.
Hill City dropped to 1-4 on the season. The Lady Rangers will return to action next week when they host Rapid City Christian in a Black Hills Conference matchup.
Spearfish will travel to Gillette, Wyoming, this weekend for the Gillette Invitational. The Spartans are scheduled to face Sheridan, Newcastle, and Glenrock on Friday before tournament play begins Saturday.
