STURGIS, S.D. – Meade County will receive $1.6 million in state funding to help repair roads impacted by the expansion of Ellsworth Air Force Base.
County commissioners approved the funding Tuesday, with plans to use the money on Elk Vale Road, where traffic has increased due to base-related construction. The funding is part of an $8 million package shared among Meade County, Pennington County, Rapid City and Box Elder.
Officials say the allocation will help, but estimated road needs in Meade County alone total around $10 million as heavy truck traffic continues to accelerate wear on local roads.
