PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota will receive millions of dollars in federal disaster assistance after severe storms caused widespread damage across the state between June 28 and July 3.
Governor Larry Rhoden announced that President Trump approved the state’s request for a presidential disaster declaration, covering eight counties and the Crow Creek and Lower Brule reservations. Preliminary assessments found more than $4.5 million in damage to roads, power systems, parks and other public infrastructure.
The federal government will cover 75 percent of eligible repair costs, providing an estimated $3.4 million in aid. Hyde and Beadle counties were among the hardest-hit areas. The Oglala Sioux Tribe also received a separate disaster declaration worth about $1.7 million to support recovery efforts.
