RAPID CITY, S.D. – The South Dakota Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to slow down and stay alert around school buses during a statewide safety campaign this week.
The School Bus Safety Outreach runs from Sept. 8 through Sept. 10. Troopers will partner with local school districts to monitor bus routes, loading zones, and areas where students regularly board and exit buses.
Marked patrol vehicles will be stationed near bus stops and other high-traffic locations, while some troopers will follow school buses to watch for unsafe driving behaviors.
The campaign includes targeted enforcement and public education efforts aimed at reducing dangerous driving and improving safety for students traveling to and from school.
Highway Patrol officials say motorists should always stop when a school bus displays flashing red lights, reduce their speed in school transportation zones, and remain alert for children near roadways.
The outreach effort is designed to help keep students safe as the school year gets underway.
