RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun has announced he will not seek another term when his current term ends in 2027.
Salamun made the announcement Sunday in a statement posted to social media, saying that by the end of his term he will have spent a decade in local government, including six years on the Rapid City Common Council and four years as mayor.
The mayor said he spent the summer discussing the decision with his family and wanted to make the announcement early to give others time to consider a run for the office.
Salamun pointed to several accomplishments during his time in city leadership, including funding and partnerships for the sports complex, expanded public safety staffing and facilities, airport expansion efforts, and major investments in roads and parks.
A U.S. Air Force veteran, Salamun became Rapid City’s 54th mayor in 2023 after serving multiple terms on the City Council, including a stint as council president.
Rapid City voters will choose the city’s next mayor in the municipal election scheduled for June 1, with the winner taking office in July.
