PIERRE, S.D. – A three-way race is taking shape for South Dakota Secretary of State, a position that oversees elections, business filings, and other key state records.
Republican Heather Baxter, Democrat Terrence Davis, and Libertarian Tamara Lesnar are all seeking the office in this year’s election.
Baxter says she wants to focus on election security and improving services for voters and businesses. Davis says his priority is maintaining confidence in South Dakota’s election system while recognizing the office’s broader responsibilities beyond elections. Lesnar says her experience and efficiency make her qualified for the role and that she wants to address policies she believes have negatively affected some residents.
The race follows Baxter’s victory over the incumbent secretary of state at the Republican convention earlier this year. Voters will decide among the three candidates in November.
The winner will take charge of one of South Dakota’s most important constitutional offices, overseeing elections, business registrations, and a variety of official state records.
