CUSTER, S.D. – The Custer County Commission has lifted its countywide burn ban following improved fire conditions.
Commission officials rescinded the ban at 8 a.m. Saturday, but residents are being reminded that several fire restrictions remain in place. Stage Two fire restrictions issued by the U.S. Forest Service are still active, and all South Dakota wildland fire regulations continue to apply.
County officials also say burn permits for slash piles remain invalid and will not be reinstated until at least November.
The commission noted it can reinstate a countywide burn ban at any time if fire conditions worsen, particularly on the recommendation of local fire officials.
Residents and visitors are also being reminded that anyone who starts a fire can be held legally responsible for any damage it causes. Officials are urging the public to follow all fire safety regulations and precautions to help prevent wildfires.
