LEAD, S.D. – The Sanford Underground Research Facility is preparing for the next phase of major upgrades to the Yates Shaft, but officials say federal funding decisions for 2027 will determine when the project moves forward.
The first phase of work is already underway, replacing electrical systems on the Yates hoist, which is used to transport personnel and equipment deep underground for scientific experiments.
SURF officials say much of the equipment is more than 90 years old, making the upgrades critical to safe and reliable operations.
The second phase, estimated at $5.5 million, would replace mechanical components including brakes and clutches. Overall improvements to the Yates Shaft are expected to cost more than $27 million.
Facility leaders say they’re encouraged by proposed funding levels in the U.S. House, but are still waiting to see final federal budget numbers before moving ahead with construction contracts.
The Yates Shaft is a key access point for underground research projects, including the LUX-ZEPLIN dark matter experiment.
