RAPID CITY, S.D. – A bomb threat at Monument Hospital in Rapid City Thursday morning has been determined to be a hoax, but the investigation remains active.
Police responded to the hospital around 8 a.m. and called in the Rapid City bomb squad to conduct a thorough search of the facility and surrounding property. Authorities found no hazardous devices and determined there was no credible threat.
Officials say the incident was similar to several other hoax threats reported at medical facilities across the country. Hospital operations continued as normal during the investigation, and patients and visitors were not restricted from entering or leaving the facility.
Rapid City Police Captain Christian Sigel says the case will be turned over to the FBI and other federal agencies because of the seriousness of the threat and the number of people affected.
Investigators are continuing to work to identify whoever made the call.
