RAPID CITY, S.D. – Hikers at this year’s Crazy Horse Volksmarch did more than enjoy a trek to the mountain carving. They also helped stock local food shelves for months to come.
Volunteers with the Care and Share Food Drive collected 16 large bins of canned and dry goods during the 40th Annual Crazy Horse Volksmarch. The donations were delivered to Church Response in Rapid City, which provides emergency food assistance to families across the Black Hills.
Church Response officials say the organization distributes about 250 bags of groceries each week and expects the food collected during the event to help support local families for roughly four months.
The donated items will be combined with fresh food and meat supplied through partnerships with organizations such as Feeding South Dakota to provide balanced grocery packages.
Organizers say the Volksmarch remains one of several annual food drives that help keep shelves stocked and ensure assistance is available for residents facing food insecurity.
