RAPID CITY, S.D. – A new study finds South Dakota residents spend less on traditional lottery games than nearly every other state in the nation.
According to an analysis by PlayCasino.com, South Dakotans spent an average of $78 per person on traditional lottery games during fiscal year 2025, ranking sixth-lowest among states with lotteries. Total traditional lottery sales in South Dakota were about $72.6 million, a decline of more than 16 percent from the previous year.
The study found scratch-off tickets accounted for nearly two-thirds of the state’s traditional lottery sales. Researchers noted the figures do not include South Dakota’s video lottery industry, which generated more than $333 million in net revenue during the same period.
The report comes as Wednesday night’s Powerball jackpot is estimated at $409 million. Nationwide, traditional lottery sales declined by about 5 percent during fiscal year 2025, according to the analysis.
