PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has released the 2026 Police Management Study, providing law enforcement agencies across the state with updated information on staffing, budgets, policies, and operational resources.
The study, compiled by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation’s Statistical Analysis Center, surveyed municipal police departments across the state to help agencies compare their operations with similarly sized departments.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, surveys were sent to all 66 police departments in South Dakota, excluding tribal agencies. Forty-three departments responded, resulting in a 65 percent participation rate.
The report includes information on department expenditures, revenues, staffing levels, and agency policies. Officials say the study is designed to help law enforcement administrators evaluate their operations and identify potential solutions to challenges facing their communities.
The Police Management Study is conducted every other year, alternating with a similar survey of South Dakota sheriff’s offices. This year marks the 21st edition of the police department survey.
