STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade County Commission has approved a resolution authorizing a future property tax credit for owner-occupied homes under South Dakota Senate Bill 96.
Commissioners approved Resolution 2026-23 on Tuesday, allowing funds from the Meade County Property Tax Reduction Fund to be applied as a credit against county property taxes for owner-occupied properties. The credit will apply to the 2027 tax year, with benefits appearing on tax bills payable in 2028.
Chief Deputy State’s Attorney Ken Chleborad explained that the county expects a delay before enough money accumulates in the new fund to distribute credits, making it necessary to postpone the benefit until the following tax cycle.
Under the resolution, all qualifying owner-occupied properties in Meade County will receive the credit at the same percentage rate, as required by state law. The exact amount of the credit will depend on available funds and the county’s property tax levy.
The resolution also allows the county auditor to retain a portion of the fund for administrative expenses, with limits set by state law.
County officials say the program will be administered in accordance with Senate Bill 96, county ordinances, and guidance issued by the South Dakota Department of Revenue.
