SPEARFISH, S.D. – The City of Spearfish is set to begin a sewer infrastructure improvement project on Oct. 16 that will rehabilitate aging sewer lines while minimizing disruptions to residents and businesses.
The work will take place near the intersection of Grant Street and 12th Street and will use a process known as Cured-In-Place Pipe, or CIPP. City officials say the method allows crews to repair existing sewer lines without extensive excavation.
Contractors will insert a resin-coated liner into the existing pipe and then cure, or harden, the material to create a new pipe within the old one. Officials say the process is faster, safer, and less disruptive than traditional pipe replacement.
Residents in the area may notice work vehicles, hoses, crews, and steam during the project. A temporary chemical odor may also be present during the curing process. City officials say the material is regulated by federal safety standards and that contractors will use a bubblegum-scented additive to help reduce the odor.
The project is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to maintain and improve its sewer infrastructure while limiting impacts on traffic, homes, and nearby businesses.
