RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City woman has been sentenced to more than eight months in jail in connection with a case involving a man’s remains being found in a hotel room earlier this year.
Twenty-nine-year-old Diana Hairy Shirt pleaded guilty to violating burial permit requirements and failing to notify authorities of a death. On Thursday, a Pennington County judge sentenced her to 260 days in jail, with credit for 85 days already served.
The charges stem from the discovery of the body of 33-year-old Jason Horned Eagle at the Rodeway Inn on North LaCrosse Street in July. Investigators say Horned Eagle’s remains had been left in the hotel room for several months before being discovered.
According to Rapid City police, detectives determined that multiple people knew about the death and took steps to conceal the body. Two other individuals, Barbara Diaz and Walter Cordon, also face charges related to the case and are scheduled to return to court next month.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Horned Eagle’s death and are still awaiting additional forensic results, including toxicology testing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Rapid City Police Department.
