SUMMERSET S.D, – Five people were injured Friday afternoon in a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 90 near Summerset that temporarily shut down westbound traffic.
According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, traffic was stopped in a construction zone near mile marker 48 when a 27-year-old Lead woman driving a Buick Enclave was unable to stop in time and struck a Chevrolet Equinox. The impact triggered a chain-reaction crash involving a GMC Acadia and a Hyundai Santa Fe.
Three occupants of the Chevrolet, a woman from Whitewood and two women from Newell, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The drivers of the Buick and GMC sustained minor injuries, while the 17-year-old driver of the Hyundai was not hurt.
The crash occurred around 4:20 Friday afternoon and forced the closure of westbound I-90 for about an hour. Traffic was rerouted onto Sturgis Road while emergency crews worked at the scene.
