SOUTH DAKOTA – With just one week until Election Day, Americans are casting ballots at a record pace in the 2026 midterm elections.
More than 34 million voters have already cast ballots either in person or by mail, according to election tracking data. Political analysts say turnout is on pace to surpass the early voting levels seen during the 2022 midterm elections and could approach the record-setting participation seen in 2018.
The election will determine control of both the U.S. House and Senate, with Democrats hoping to regain one or both chambers from Republicans. Several closely watched Senate races in states including Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Alaska, and Texas are expected to play a major role in determining which party controls the Senate.
Election experts say the surge in early voting may be driven by voters returning to in-person voting habits after the pandemic, along with heightened interest in several competitive national races.
Across the country, states are reporting strong turnout numbers, with some seeing significantly higher participation than in previous midterm elections.
Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, and officials are encouraging voters to confirm their polling location, review identification requirements, and make a plan to cast their ballot before polls close.
