SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakotans will have a unique opportunity Monday to take part in a piece of state history as the America’s 250 South Dakota Commission buries the state’s official time capsule.
The ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Battleship South Dakota Memorial in Sioux Falls. The capsule will remain sealed for 50 years before being opened in 2076 as part of the nation’s 300th anniversary celebration.
The event also coincides with South Dakota’s statehood anniversary. State Historian Dr. Ben Jones says the time capsule serves as a way to preserve a snapshot of South Dakota today while creating a connection for future generations.
Items placed inside the capsule were selected by members of the America 250 South Dakota Commission. Organizers say they hope some of the people attending Monday’s ceremony will still be around to witness its opening five decades from now.
The event is part of a series of activities leading up to America’s 250th birthday and is intended to celebrate both South Dakota’s history and its future.
