PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley is joining attorneys general from 45 states and territories in urging Congress to pass the Kids Online Safety Act.
The proposed federal legislation would establish minimum safety standards for social media and gaming platforms while still allowing states to enforce their own child protection laws.
Jackley says South Dakota has already taken steps to improve online safety, including passing state legislation and securing part of a $52 million settlement with Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.
Supporters of the bill say the Meta settlement created important safeguards but argue stronger federal action is needed to ensure consistent protections for children and teens across the technology industry.
The bipartisan effort includes attorneys general from neighboring Wyoming and North Dakota, who are also calling on Congress to approve nationwide online safety standards for young users.
