STURGIS, S.D. – Meade County authorities say a semi-truck suspected of bypassing a state weigh station was stopped and cited Thursday morning following a tip from a local resident.
According to the Meade County Sheriff’s Office, the truck was reported traveling on county gravel roads after turning from Ricard Road onto Elk Creek Road. Officials say commercial drivers sometimes use secondary routes to avoid the Tilford Weigh Station on Interstate 90, causing significant wear and damage to county roads.
Deputies located the truck near Interstate 90 Exit 52 after reports that the driver failed to stop at multiple stop signs. The South Dakota Highway Patrol’s Motor Carrier Enforcement Division was called in to inspect the vehicle.
The semi was escorted back to the Tilford Weigh Station for an official inspection and weighing. Meade County deputies issued citations for traffic violations, while Highway Patrol officers issued additional citations related to weight restrictions and commercial vehicle compliance.
Sheriff’s officials credited both community members and interagency cooperation for helping enforce regulations across Meade County’s extensive road system.
