The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission is expanding the territory in the Black Hills where hunters can use dogs to chase mountain lions.
The change approved this week adds areas in the eastern and southern Hills. Commissioners also lifted a permit requirement for hunters without dogs inside Custer State Park. Those hunters will now only need a state license.
The move broadens hunting opportunities while keeping the state’s population management goals in place. Wildlife officials estimate there are about 393 mountain lions in the Black Hills, with a target range of 200 to 300.
The overall harvest cap stays the same: 60 lions or 40 females, whichever comes first. GFP says the adjustments give hunters more flexibility while ensuring the population remains sustainable.
Residents near the expanded zones could see more hunting activity with dogs, which may mean added noise or access questions. GFP says it will monitor both hunter participation and lion numbers as the season continues.
