The Spearfish Spartans earned their first road victory of the season in dominant fashion Friday night, defeating the winless Douglas Patriots 56-6 to improve to 5-2.
Spearfish wasted no time getting on the board, as junior Thomas Hughes returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Senior Jack Couaette added a 4-yard touchdown reception from Hughes, followed by a scoring strike to Kade Vavruska and a pick-six by Couaette to give the Spartans a commanding 28-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Freshman quarterback Owynn Meredith took over in the second quarter and continued the offensive onslaught, connecting with Karsen Seyer for a touchdown on the first play of the period. Rushing scores from Graham Hughes and Mick Bosh extended the lead to 49-0 at halftime, triggering a running clock for the second half.
Meredith added one more touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, finding fellow freshman Liam Goetz for his first career varsity score. Douglas avoided the shutout with a 1-yard touchdown run on the final play of the game.
Spearfish kicker Sam Marcus was perfect on extra points, converting all eight attempts.
The Spartans will host the Pierre Governors next Friday at Lyle Hare Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. MT, with coverage on KDSJ 980 AM, 103.5 FM, kdsj980.com, and streaming live on KDSJ-TV via YouTube and Facebook.
