The Spearfish High School Activities Department has announced its 2025 Fine Arts Hall of Fame class, honoring two alumni whose careers have left a lasting impact on the arts. This year’s inductees are Michael Kent Knutson, Class of 2005 (PICTURED ABOVE) , recognized for his achievements in visual arts, and the late Kurt Bauer, Class of 1977, honored for his contributions to theater arts.
The Fine Arts Hall of Fame was established to recognize former Spearfish High School students who have excelled professionally in music, visual arts, theater, dance, or literature. Nominations are accepted from the public and reviewed by a selection committee. The program highlights a wide range of artistic disciplines, from painting and sculpture to opera, film, choreography, journalism, and more.
Knutson, known to many in Spearfish simply as “Mikey,” has built a distinguished career as an artist, educator, and advocate for the role of the arts in community life. Born and raised in Spearfish, he grew up surrounded by creativity. His father, James Knutson, was an art professor at Black Hills State University, while his mother, Paula Manley, taught art in the Sturgis School District.
“Growing up with two art educators as parents meant the arts were simply part of everyday life,” Knutson said. “So many of my teachers had studied under my dad, they assumed I would be good at art—expected it even. I guess you could say I grew up trying to live up to the hype.”
As a child, Knutson was a familiar presence at community arts events, from the Spearfish Festival in the Park to youth exhibits at the Matthews Opera House. Those early experiences helped shape the narrative-driven, cinematic style that would later define his professional work.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in art from Black Hills State University, Knutson completed a Master of Fine Arts at Fort Hays State University. His artwork has since been featured at universities and galleries across the Midwest, including the University of Kansas, Kansas State University, Colorado State University, and Black Hills State University. He has also created several major public murals, including the Majestic Butterfly in Garden City, Kansas, and the Ancient Tortoise at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History.
Knutson is currently a professor of art at Garden City Community College, where he has twice been named Professor of the Year. He also serves as president of the Garden City Arts Board of Directors and is a frequent presenter at national arts conferences.
Despite his professional success across the Great Plains, Knutson says his roots remain firmly in the Black Hills. “Spearfish and the Black Hills will always be home,” he said. “I’d love to make it back someday. That landscape and community have shaped everything I am today.”
Knutson will be formally inducted into the Spearfish High School Fine Arts Hall of Fame on Friday, December 19 at 2 p.m. in the Spearfish High School Auditorium. He joins fellow 2025 inductee Kurt Bauer, who was honored earlier this fall during the school’s choir concert for his lifelong contributions to theater arts.
The Activities Department expressed pride in recognizing both inductees, noting that their achievements reflect the values and creative spirit of Spearfish High School.
“Celebrating alumni like Michael and Kurt reminds our students of what is possible,” the department shared. “Their work shows how the arts can shape communities, inspire others, and leave a legacy that lasts far beyond the classroom.”
