Black Hills State University Football announced this week that assistant coach Drake Davidson has been promoted to offensive coordinator, replacing Coach Dave Schramm after one season.
Davidson has been part of the Yellow Jacket staff since 2021, beginning as a graduate assistant and wide receivers coach before moving into a full‑time assistant role in 2023. Over the past three seasons, he has coached both wide receivers and quarterbacks, including a stint in 2024 working exclusively with the quarterbacks and a return to wide receivers in 2025.
During the 2025 season, Davidson coached unanimous First Team All‑American TJ Chukwurah, who set BHSU’s NCAA Division II era records with 1,100 receiving yards and 16 receiving touchdowns.
Under Davidson’s tenure on staff, the Yellow Jackets have developed one of the top passing offenses in Division II. BHSU ranked 20th nationally in passing offense in 2023 and 28th in 2025, and has finished in the top four of the RMAC in passing yards each of the last three seasons. The program posted a second‑place conference finish in 2025, averaging 260.8 passing yards per game.
Davidson will take over an offense that has steadily improved during his time with the program and looks to replace several key contributors for the upcoming season.
