The Spearfish Lady Spartans return to the court Tuesday night when they host the Hot Springs Lady Bison at Spearfish High School. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
Spearfish enters at 3–2 and sits fourth in the Black Hills Conference under fifth‑year head coach Dakota Johnson, who remains undefeated against Hot Springs. The Lady Spartans average 45 points per game while allowing 42, and they are 3–0 against teams above .500, including 2–0 against BHC/Class A opponents.
After a narrow loss to Rapid City Stevens earlier this month—a game the Spartans believed they let slip away—Spearfish responded with a renewed edge, defeating Hill City 53–35 on Jan. 8 by dominating the paint and forcing turnovers. With top‑ranked and undefeated Mahpiya Luta looming on Thursday, Johnson’s team aims to stack another strong performance without looking ahead.

- Crisp ball movement
Hot Springs Lady Bison (1–8) — 9th in the BHC
Head coach Mike Remington leads a Hot Springs team that is among the youngest in Class A girls basketball. The Lady Bison average 26 points per game while allowing 54, and they are 0–3 against teams under .500 and 1–5 on the road.
The roster features eight freshmen, one sophomore, and one eighth‑grader. Only two upperclassmen—Suzanna Campbell, a 5’11 senior center, and Arryanna Rooks, a 5’9 junior forward—anchor the lineup and provide leadership. Their size inside will be crucial as they battle Spearfish’s senior forward Tiersyn Grubb, the Spartans’ top post defender and rebounder.
Hot Springs finished sixth in the West River Tournament and continues to search for consistency and identity as its young core gains experience.
Keys for Hot Springs
- MUST make shots to stay competitive
- Control tempo and avoid trying to match Spearfish’s pace
- Take care of the basketball and force turnovers
- Maintain time of possession
