South Dakota’s two largest airports are set to receive major upgrades after securing $50 million in federal funding. The money is part of a larger $145 million spending package obtained by U.S. Senator Mike Rounds.
Rapid City Regional Airport will receive $20 million for its terminal expansion, which includes five new gates, larger waiting areas, improved accessibility, and upgraded passenger amenities. Sioux Falls Regional Airport will receive $30 million for its own expansion to handle growing passenger demand.
Both airports saw record‑setting traffic last year. Rapid City ended 2025 with more than 452,000 enplanements, while Sioux Falls surpassed 750,000, the highest totals ever recorded for each facility.
Airport officials say the funding is a significant investment in South Dakota’s air service infrastructure and will help support long‑term growth and economic impact across the state.
The money comes through the federal Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development appropriations bill. Both airports handle more than 95 percent of South Dakota’s commercial air traffic.
