Huron (10-4) earned a 46–38 win over Spearfish (10-2) in boys varsity basketball Friday night, using a decisive third quarter to separate in an otherwise tightly contested matchup. The Tigers were led by Blake Ellwein, who finished with 21 points to lead all scorers.
Spearfish outscored Huron in three of the four quarters but was held scoreless in the third, allowing the Tigers to build the margin they needed to secure the road victory. The offensive drought overshadowed otherwise balanced production from the Spartans.
Mason Southern led Spearfish with 11 points, while Kamren Davis added 8. Season‑leading scorer Kade Vavruska was limited to five points under tight defensive pressure.
Huron capitalized on the third‑quarter swing, controlling possession and slowing the pace to protect its lead down the stretch. The Tigers’ defensive adjustments after halftime proved decisive, as Spearfish was unable to recover despite winning the fourth quarter.
Huron will head to Sturgis to battle the Scoopers Saturday, while the Spartans will host the Mitchell Kernels. The Kernels beat the Scoopers 57-45 on Friday.
