The Spearfish Spartans and Sturgis Scoopers meet tonight in a West River rivalry matchup as both teams look to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season. The rivalry has been especially tight in recent years — each of the last three meetings has been decided by four points or fewer, adding extra weight to tonight’s contest.
Spearfish enters at 11–2, coming off a strong win over Mitchell in which the Spartans controlled the second half and showcased their depth, ball movement, and defensive pressure. Behind consistent guard play and a balanced scoring attack, Spearfish has positioned itself as one of the most reliable teams in Class AA.
Sturgis comes in at 4–11, but the Scoopers feature one of the region’s top individual scorers in junior guard Hayden Rock, who averages over 20 points per game and scored 28 points against Huron in his most recent outing. Rock’s scoring ability has kept Sturgis competitive in several games, and the Spartans will need to account for him defensively from the opening tip.
The Scoopers rely on physical defense and rebounding to stay in games, and they’ll look to slow the pace and limit Spearfish’s transition opportunities — an area where the Spartans have excelled all season. Spearfish, meanwhile, will focus on ball security and maintaining offensive rhythm to avoid giving Sturgis extra possessions.
With postseason positioning on the line and a rivalry known for close finishes, tonight’s matchup has the potential to deliver another tight, high‑energy battle.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Spearfish High School, following the girls varsity game. Fans can catch all the action on KDSJ 980 AM, 103.5 FM, kdsj980.com, the KDSJ Sports Mobile App, and KDSJ-TV on YouTube and on Facebook Live.
