A dominant defensive stretch and a surge from senior Kamren Davis powered the Spearfish Spartans (12–2) to a 60–31 rivalry win over Sturgis (4-11) on Tuesday night. The victory marked Spearfish’s 12th win of the season and strengthened its position near the top of the Class AA standings.
Spearfish trailed 12–7 after the first quarter but took full control from that point forward, outscoring the Scoopers 34–0 over the next 17 minutes of game time. Sturgis did not record a field goal the entire second quarter until the 5:11 mark of the third, as the Spartans’ defense smothered the Scoopers’ perimeter attack. It is the second straight game where Sturgis failed to score a bucket in a quarter in a varsity contest.
Senior guard/forward Kamren Davis led all scorers with 21 points, including a highlight‑reel alley‑oop dunk to open the third quarter that sparked a decisive run. Davis scored 14 points in the third alone, hitting six field goals and a three‑pointer as Spearfish pulled away.
Junior forward Kade Vavruska added 17 points, nine of them in the fourth quarter. Vavruska has reached double figures in all but one game this season.
Spearfish’s defensive focus centered on Sturgis guard Hayden Rock, who entered the night as one of Class AA’s top scorers. The Spartans held Rock to nine points, and no Sturgis player reached double digits. Senior guard Jerek Dufner added eight points for the Scoopers, who fell to 4–12 with their sixth straight loss.
Sturgis remains inside the top‑16 cutoff for the SoDak 16 but missed a key opportunity to improve its seed‑point average. Spearfish, meanwhile, continues to climb, holding a 42.643 seed‑point average as of Feb. 12, placing the Spartans third in Class AA.
The Scoopers will look to break this six-game skid on Friday when they host the Hot Springs Bison (5-10). The Spartans will also return to Class A action when they travel to Custer on Thursday, with that game streaming live on KDSJ-TV on YouTube and on Facebook Live.
