Senate Majority Leader John Thune says he plans to bring the SAVE America Act to the Senate floor next week. The bill would require proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote and photo identification to cast a ballot.
The move follows President Trump’s announcement that he will not sign other legislation until the measure passes. He has also renewed calls to limit mail‑in voting.
Supporters argue the bill would prevent illegal voting, which is already rare and prohibited under federal law. Opponents say it could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, particularly women, minorities, and young people.
Thune criticized Democratic opposition, saying he believes it is either partisan resistance or concern that illegal voting benefits Democrats.
The bill faces steep odds in the Senate. It would need 60 votes to advance under current filibuster rules — and Thune has rejected calls to change those rules.
