Spearfish High School Activities Director Dalton Wademan has announced that Cody Powers has been selected as the next head coach of the Spearfish High School girls wrestling program. The hire is pending approval from the Spearfish Board of Education.
Powers will take over for longtime coach Joel Martin, who retired following the 2025–26 season. Martin had led the girls program since its launch in 2022, adding to nearly three decades of coaching at Spearfish High School.
Powers is a Black Hills State University graduate, where he played football before joining the Spearfish coaching staff at both the high school and middle school levels. He is in his tenth year as a physical education teacher at Creekside Elementary.
He joined the high school wrestling staff in 2016 and served as an assistant coach under Martin during the inaugural season of the girls wrestling program. Powers has spent the past four seasons as an assistant with the girls team and continues to coach football and middle school track.
Wademan said Powers’ experience and long‑term involvement with the program made him a strong fit for the role, noting his relationships with current athletes and younger wrestlers in the pipeline.
